No Gate-keeping: Journaling to Improve Mental Health and Wellness Actually Works


In the hustle and bustle of modern life, our minds are constantly bombarded with thoughts, tasks, and emotions. Amidst this chaos, finding a moment of clarity can seem impossible.

 The good news is, there's a simple yet powerful tool that can help us navigate this maze of thoughts and emotions: journaling.

Journaling is not merely putting pen to paper; it's a practice that can profoundly impact our mental health and aid in the journey of self-discovery. At its core, journaling is a form of brain dumping—a way to release the clutter from our minds and gain insight into our innermost thoughts and feelings.

The Power of Brain Dumping

Imagine your mind as a cluttered room, filled with various items vying for your attention. Now, picture journaling as the act of clearing out that room, item by item, until you're left with a sense of spaciousness and clarity. This is essentially what brain dumping achieves. When we engage in brain dumping through journaling, we give ourselves permission to unload all the thoughts, worries, and emotions swirling around in our minds. By transferring these thoughts onto paper, we create a tangible space to examine and process them.


Benefits for Mental Health

The benefits of journaling extend far beyond just decluttering the mind. Research has shown that regularly journaling can have a positive impact on mental health in several ways:

1. Stress Reduction: Writing about stressful events or emotions can help reduce their intensity and provide a sense of relief.

Getting Started

Embarking on a journaling practice doesn't require any special tools or expertise—just a willingness to put pen to paper and explore your inner landscape. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. Set Aside Time: And stick to it. Find a quiet moment in your day to dedicate to journaling, whether it's first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or before bed. Pick a time that feels right for you. Some prefer first thing in the morning so that they can set their intent and be present throughout the day. Others, like myself, prefer to use journaling as a release, before bedtime. I sleep so much better when I take the thoughts and worries from the day, out of my mind and into my notebook. 

2. Choose Your Format: Whether you prefer a traditional notebook, a digital journaling app, or even voice recordings, choose a format that feels comfortable and accessible to you.

3. Experiment with Prompts: If you're not sure what to write about, try using journal prompts to spark your creativity and reflection.

4. Be Consistent: For me, this is the hardest part. But like any habit, journaling is most effective when practiced regularly. Aim to make it a daily or weekly ritual, even if just for a few minutes each time.


When I first began to journal, I'll admit that it felt a tad uncomfortable. Which in retrospect is so silly; this is content for my eyes only, so why feel any shame or embarrassment? The only thing that helped me push past those initial feelings of uncertainty was a list of journal prompts. Having a structured set of questions was the ticket to keep up the routine and took the guesswork out of what to write about. 

5 Journal prompts to get you started:

1. Write about a time when you felt completely in tune with yourself and your surroundings. What were you doing, and what made that experience so meaningful?

2. Reflect on your relationships with others. What qualities do you admire in the people you choose to spend time with, and what does that reveal about your own values and priorities?

3. Imagine your ideal future self, five or ten years from now. What goals have you achieved, and what aspects of your life have you prioritized for growth and development?

4. Explore your relationship with self-care and well-being. How do you currently prioritize taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional health, and what changes could you make to better support yourself?

5. Consider the things that bring you joy and fulfillment in life, both big and small. Make a list of these moments or activities, and reflect on how you can incorporate more of them into your daily routine.
